Caroline Emery

Managing Director

I founded Metra Surveying in 2018 after more than 23 years in the surveying industry, having progressed from Assistant Engineer to Senior Engineer and then Laser Scanning Manager. That experience gave me a strong grounding across engineering surveying, dimensional control, monitoring, setting out and 3D laser scanning, as well as the opportunity to lead teams and deliver complex projects throughout the UK and Europe.

I originally studied Geography at Loughborough University, following an International Baccalaureate focused on Physics, Mathematics and Geography. Surveying brought those interests together in a practical way, combining technical accuracy, problem-solving and the opportunity to work on a wide range of challenging projects.

Throughout my career, I have always looked for better and more efficient ways to work without compromising accuracy. I was closely involved in introducing new technology and survey methods, including laser scanning, GPS and cable detection systems, and later established and managed a dedicated 3D laser scanning and modelling department. The work took us across Europe, from industrial facilities in Belgium and Italy to projects in Zurich and London and demonstrated the value of combining the right technology with experienced people and well-managed processes.

That approach continues to shape Metra today. I wanted to build a surveying company known not only for technical capability, but also for being dependable, responsive and straightforward to work with. Our clients rely on us to provide accurate information that supports critical decisions on site, so I believe quality has to remain consistent at every stage – from the initial quotation and project planning through to delivery of the final data.

A significant part of my role is leading and developing the team. I have always enjoyed working with people’s strengths, mentoring less experienced surveyors and helping colleagues progress in their careers. Besides technical training, building a capable team is about giving people responsibility, supporting their development and creating a culture where high standards are understood and shared.

Since establishing Metra, I have grown the business into a team delivering projects for clients across the UK. I am closely involved in the day-to-day operation of the company, including client relationships, quotations, project resourcing, technical delivery and staff development. That involvement ensures our clients receive the same level of care and attention as the business continues to grow.

I aim to develop Metra as a surveying company and to contribute positively to the wider progression of the profession. Technology will continue to change how surveying is delivered, but accuracy, judgement and experience will always remain fundamental. For me, progress means making the best use of new tools while retaining the standards and reliability our clients expect.

Outside work, I enjoy sport and being active. I manage and coach a ladies’ football team, cycle regularly and have completed two charity rides from London to Southend-on-Sea. I have also skied from a young age and am part of a monthly book club. Coaching in particular reflects much of what I value professionally – recognising individual strengths, encouraging development and bringing people together to achieve a shared result.
